My request is less about group chats and more about chat across the board (covering both channels + group DMs). We’ve gotten a request from one of our communities to just turn chat email summaries off across the board but there’s no easy way to do it.
I do like Jakke’s suggestion a lot though: if you could easily default chat emails to off but users could opt in (as opposed to the current set up where they need to opt out) that would also solve the issue.
It’s also worth sharing WHY some people want to turn the chat emails off: there are times when users get the chat email summaries at the same time as push notifications for the same message. The current logic for sending out chat email summaries seems to be based on the last time the user was present so if you’ve been off chat for more than 15 minutes and someone happens to message you right before the emails go out they arrive at the same time. Instead the emails should only get sent out if the message has been unread for 5-10 minutes.
