I have a spare PC which I can use as a server, host, or whatever discourse needs. It is connected to my storage server, so plenty of storage (130TB + 8tb of ssd’s in the pc itself) and has good specs, 64gb of ram, intel i9-12900k and 2x Nvidia Titan. I just want to make a forum that I can host online through that PC, so no one needs to connect to my wifi to run it, and can just go and run it off their mobile network. Basically I previously used a whatsapp group, but it’s just getting uncategorised, so I have decided to setup a forum. I don’t want to spend money, cause why would I. It should be easy to follow since I am a beginner, and yeah some extra guides on stuff like how do I forward the ports and stuff from local to the internet to make it work online. I have referred to other topics, but I can’t really understand. Thanks for the help.

You can see Install Discourse on a residential internet with Cloudflare Tunnel You’ll need email as discussed. If you try hard you can use mailgun pay as you go, but they make it hard to figure out how to get in that plan. It’s $1/1000 emails.

My English grammer is no good :slightly_smiling_face: I didn’t understand, it’s my second language So now, we are going to have limited users.

My 2 cents: I’ve been a sysadmin for 30 years, switched to DevOps about 13 years ago, I have maintained my own server al these years so the setup of discourse 3 months ago was no biggy for me, expecially that now it’s done in docker, and yet it did take about 3 days to finalize the email interface issues. running your own server these days, even with DKIM, SPF and all the other TLAs, it’s still impossible to stay afloat and not fall into an RBL just because some big faceless corp decided to block a Class B your VPS is sitting in at a data center across the world. There’s no escaping paying for a relay service. I looked as a few, I use mailjet for my own mail but the free tier was not enough and the price cliff is pretty painful for my pocket. I discovered AWS SES was the cheapest solution and it worked great ever since. I wish I could use it for all my emails, but it’s not really made for that.

I don’t have post via email enabled which would probably add cost but I’ve been running my site for 5 years with Mailgun for a grand total of $0 [image] Arpit D: Yeh, I could go with that. We usually only have 60-70 messages a day. But I think the pay as you go is a better option, I mean in an emergency I couldn’t go and get limit of 100 msgs. I am ready to pay 1$/1000 emails subscription, it’s cheap and I can divide that between my freinds too. So like less than 10 cents per 1000 emails for me. We all live in the same apartment, if we all can get a extra routers as repeaters and buy one fast 1gbps router with a fast plan together, it could possibly enable us to talk when we are home, that is on the residential network. I have to wait to think to go on cloud with the 100$ plan as discourse offers, because that is per month, abd considering I would be using the forum for more than 10 years, it will cost me 12000$ atleast. Instead I want a one time pay, like investing 2000$ on all the hardware right now, and paying like 30 bucks a month for the fast wifi (internet is dirt cheap here) then it would only take 3600+2000 that is 5600$, half the price. And considering my friends are too paying, less than 150$. I mean…or you could just host it on DigitalOcean for $15 a month and skip all of that

There isn’t any added cost for post or reply by e-mail. [image] Mol: Changed recently - Accounts without a credit card are limited to sending 100 messages a day! Good to know about that for mailgun, Brevo free plan is a little more capped at 300 per day for free tier (no limit for $9/month plan).

[image] Architect: added cost for post or reply by e-mail. Good to know that, i avoid the money thing.. People say the more you use it, the poor you get :upside_down_face:

This is the way to setup a mail-receiver: [image] Configure direct-delivery incoming email for self-hosted sites with Mail-Receiver Self-Hosting Discourse is all about enabling civilized discussion. While plenty of people like a web interface, e-mail is still the “hub” of many people’s online lives. That’s why sending e-mail is so important, and when you’re sending e-mail, you really want to be able to receive it, too. There are several reasons why: If e-mails “bounce” (they can’t be delivered for some reason), you need to know about that. Repeatedly sending e-mails that bounce will get your e-mails flagged as spam. Receiving e-ma…

There’s a deal now with aws. You spent $1 and get $750. Credits expires in 12 months. aws-lift AWS Lift is an offer designed to help businesses like you, start your cloud journey in a risk-free and cost-effective manner. [Screenshot_1]

Thanks, I will try to get it. One thing I understand now, is that everything has a cost but one thing :slightly_smiling_face: You gotta buy a ring for ya girl You gotta buy a car for ya mom You gotta buy a house for ya dad You gotta buy nothing for the homies :upside_down_face: Btw, does it accept american express credit cardcard?

For the Amazon Web Service promotion there they don’t ask for a payment card for the application, but can take 10 days to review applicants before knowing if account is approved.
