Auto gridding is still in place. You need to upload 3 images or more at once for the automatic tag to apply. If you just upload 1 image at time you will not get an auto grid. Possible user setting to disable this is being tracker here: Turning off auto-grid-images?

Yes, this happens if you upload 1 at a time, select all the images and upload them at the same time to get a grid

Nope it still ignores it if the contribution is written with the wysiwyg editor. I’m on the latest update.
