The lead admin of the openmod forum, robbie.morrison, asked how to obtain the version number of their Discourse engine for tracking features and fixes. While version info used to appear in the Admin dashboard as shown in a meta.discourse.org thread, it’s not visible on their current hosted instance. eisammy suggested checking the page source for a commit hash, but robbie.morrison clarified they wanted the human-readable dot-separated version string shown in dashboard screenshots. RGJ, from hosting provider Communiteq, explained that version numbers are intentionally hidden in the dashboard to reduce support queries, but admins can find the version in the hosting control panel instead — sharing a screenshot as proof. robbie.morrison accepted this workaround and marked the question resolved. Jagster humorously noted that the accepted solution should be marked as such to avoid confusion. The discussion highlights that while version info is accessible, it’s often hidden by hosts for operational reasons, and admins should consult their hosting control panel for accurate version details.
I am the lead admin (of the openmod forum) and would like to know the version number of the discourse engine in use. For the purpose of checking against announced features and fixes.
This information was/is apparently available via the Admin section:
But I cannot find this information anywhere on my (presumably current) release (hosted by Communiteq in the Netherlands). Am I missing something? And also to note several historical threads on this forum on the general theme of obtaining version information as an admin (my use‑case) and as a registered user. TIA.
Look for <meta name="generator" content="Discourse *.*.* - https://github.com/discourse/discourse version there’s version commit code: d82220fc72a51aedd85e37180cdacea3c8a4a836
Thanks @eisammy, that is a hash embedded in the source – which has some use‑cases.
The screenshot above shows the dot‑separated version string built into the Admin dashboard — which is more what I had in mind. Was that screenshot a mockup? Or do I need to update my Admin layout somehow? Or is that display coming in a future release?
At Communiteq hosting, we suppress the version number in the Discourse dashboard, since the “you updated recently” and “please update!” messages tend to lead to a lot of (unnecessary) support questions. (I think CDCK hosting suppresses it too).
Instead, you can find the version number of your forum software in our control panel.
