Launch Composer from Topic Reply at foot of Topic: Draft missing on re-initiate

AI-generated summary

A user merefield reported a potential bug where drafts disappear after closing and reopening the Composer from the bottom reply button of a topic, despite being saved and visible in the drafts list. Refreshing the page restores the draft automatically. Ethsim2 speculated it might be deliberate, noting a stay/reload prompt appears when drafting over an existing draft. mcwumbly flagged the issue to davidb, linking to a relevant PR (#33543) that appears to resolve it. davidb confirmed the PR fixes the issue and that it was merged the following day. He verified the fix works as expected — drafts now persist correctly when reopening the Composer from the topic reply. This issue falls under the “Bug” category with the “drafts” tag, and the fix is now live.

This might be a bug, but I’m not sure why this doesn’t work:

Steps to Reproduce.

  • venture into a Topic :ninja:
  • go to bottom of Topic and hit Reply
  • start drafting your Topic in the Composer :scroll:
  • hit the down arrows to minimise the Composer
  • Close the Composer :cross_mark:
  • when prompted, save your Draft
  • Hit the Reply button again

Expected result:

  • Draft is there

Actual result:

  • Draft is nowhere to be seen! :open_mouth:

HOWEVER

  • The draft exists in my list of drafts
  • If I refresh the Topic, the Composer will auto-open and the draft will pop up. :sparkles:

This looks like a missed opportunity - or is it deliberate?

I’ve always thought delibrate. However i notice after trying to write a new draft where the old draft was, you get a stay/reload prompt.

@davidb can you take a peek at this one?

It sounds similar to what you’re working on here, but I’m not sure it’s the exact same issue:

I did a quick test myself, and it does look like the PR fixes this.

Thanks for reporting and the repro, the PR @mcwumbly shared above will fix this. If there are no issues it should get merged this week.

This was merged yesterday, I tested a draft on this topic and it appears to be working correctly.
