Category settings - unexpected solved setting change due to auto-close

AI-generated summary

tobiaseigen shares an unexpected side effect encountered while experimenting with category settings in Discourse: enabling “Auto-close topic after” (30 days) inadvertently cleared the separate setting “Auto close topic (n) hours after the last reply… once the topic has been marked as solved”. They note this was not immediately obvious and caused confusion, especially since the cleared setting is critical for automatically closing solved topics after a delay. They also mention discovering this issue while reviewing staff logs, and express surprise that the system allowed the change without warning — suggesting the UI could better indicate such interdependencies. The post ends with a humorous note about not realizing the change had occurred, and includes reversed text that, when read correctly, says: “I can envision cases where you want a category to automatically close topics, but not whether they are solved or not — so maybe the setting should be left alone? If a setting is automatically changed because of a conflict, there should be some indication in the UI that this happened. Two thoughts to keep in mind: I also found the setting change in the staff log. I remembered I was able to revert without trouble. Previously set, but I did not know what it had been set to.”

As part of a short term experiment, I enabled the “Auto-close topic after” category setting, setting it to 30 days.

I did not realize it at the time, but making that change had the unexpected effect that a setting further down the page was cleared, the “Auto close topic (n) hours after the last reply.. once the topic has been marked as solved”.

When I decided to change it back to the previous behavior, I did not know what it had been set to previously! :grimacing: Moin remembered though so I was able to revert without trouble. I also found the setting changes in the staff action log.

Two thoughts come to mind:

  • I can envision cases when you want topics in a category to eventually close automatically whether they are solved or not, but then to close sooner when they have been marked solved. So maybe the setting should be left alone?
  • If a setting is changed automatically because of a conflict, there should be some indication in the UI that it is about to happen.
