Missing warnings and unexpected behavior when changing tags or categories for solved topics

Continuing the discussion from When moving a solved topic to a category that disallows solutions, remove solved:

Looks like this feature was added recently:

Overall, the feature works but maybe a bit too well
I’ve noticed a few problematic side effects caused by these changes:

  1. When a solution is removed because all tags that allowed solving the topic are removed, there is no warning that this action will remove the solution. This is especially problematic because:
  2. The solution is also removed even if the topic is in a category that allows solutions, as soon as the tags are removed. As long as either the category or a tag allows solutions, I would expect the topic to remain solved.
  3. The issue also exists the other way around: if a topic is in a category that allows solutions and has a tag that allows solutions, and the topic is moved to a different category, the solution is removed. In this case at least there is a warning but I would prefer if it was possible to keep the solution instead of having to select it again after the topic is moved.

Would it be possible to:

  • Warn users when removing tags will result in the solution being removed?
  • Keep solutions as long as either the category or at least one tag allows the topic to be marked as solved?

Thanks for these notes, @Moin — we’re taking another look to make sure we better account for solved tags. We’ll share an update here shortly.

We’ve made an update that addresses both of these problems:

If you have setup a tag as an Enable solved tag, removing that tag from a solved topic will remove the solution. We’ll notify admins when they go to remove the tag so they’re aware:

In situations where the topic is in a solved category and has a solved tag, removing one or the other (i.e. removing the solved tag but keeping it in the solved category or moving it out of the solved category but keeping the solved tag) has no impact on the topic’s solution.
