Default changes for trust level 3 requirements

We want to adjust the defaults for the maximum number of topics viewed and posts read required to reach trust level three to make it easier for users on very active forums to reach this trust level.

To achieve this, we are introducing an “Enable new defaults for trust level 3 requirements” upcoming change, which when enabled, will change the following site setting default values:

  • The default of tl3_requires_topics_viewed_cap is set to 250 (currently 500)
  • The default for tl3_requires_posts_read_cap is set to 2000 (currently 20,000)
  • The default for tl3_promotion_min_duration is set to 100 days (currently 14)

Admins who change these values manually will see no effect. When this change moves to Stable, we will make these new defaults permanent and remove the upcoming change, but the settings will still be available for admins to change.

Opting in early

To apply this change to your site now, enable the “Enable new defaults for trust level 3 requirements” upcoming change in /admin/config/upcoming-changes :

You will see the change reflected in the site settings UI:

@martin - if the previous defaults were changed will this reset those changes?

Hi there, did you see this bit?

No it won’t, any changes that admins have made to settings are preserved, only the underlying defaults are changed.

So to confirm, if we change the values, after this update if we were to click Reset, it would show the new defaults?

Yes that’s correct, this is how the site setting default override system works within upcoming changes. If you disable the upcoming change, then the old defaults will reappear.

Once we are confident with this change, we will remove the upcoming change altogether, and there will only be one set of defaults for these site settings.
