I wonder, is there an actual need for an IRC channel? Isn’t this supposed to be the community about Discourse?

Maybe not ‘need’ per se, but there’s always going to be interactions and discussions that work better in one medium or another. I think offering an IRC channel is great for allowing people to have casual conversations and more off-topic dialogue with each other.

Does it have to be an actual console-ish IRC, or can it be a chat implementation like that of [http://chat.stackexchange.com](http://chat.stackexchange.com) ?
