Allow customizing when posts are marked as read

Currently posts are marked as read when the top of the post is slightly above the bottom of the browser window. It would be nice if there were an option to configure it so posts would only be marked as read when the bottom of the post is above the bottom of the window, so the entire post would have been read, not just the first sentence.

If this is really an issue, I’d be more inclined to see if we can tweak the default to work better, rather than adding more configuration options for users.

When did you last encounter this problem? Can you describe the scenario and whether it had any impact on you beyond the indicator being marked read?

If others have experienced this problem as well, I’m interested in hearing those stories.

In longer threads where I want to thoroughly read every reply but not all at once I have to be very careful as I am scrolling down because if I scroll even a few pixels too far it will mark the reply below the one that I am currently reading as read even though I haven’t read it. Some replies are very long so I would then have to read the entire next reply and make sure not to repeat the mistake.

Changing the default would probably be fine.

I think another way to approach this could be to improve our existing “mark unread” feature.

Currently I think that marks just the last post as unread, as a way to help you keep the topic in your unread list, but doesn’t give you a way to indicate which posts are unread.

Allowing someone to “mark unread from here” on a particular post would I think meet your need, and open the door for other use cases like “I just want to re-read from here later”
