# Allow setting "Hot" as default topic list for categories

Admins can set “[Hot](https://meta.discourse.org/t/discover-popular-conversations-in-your-community-with-hot-topic-sorting/296747/1)” as the default sorting for the Main page but this option is not available for category lists. There, only Latest and Top are available. To be consistent, the possibility to set “Hot” topic sorting by default should be available as well.

Note… this is already quite complicated …
We may want to rethink some of this when we add hot as an option.

Not disagreeing that it is complicated, but this isn’t Hot’s fault. 🙂 In fact, Hot brings simplicity to those who aren’t quite satisfied with Latest and Top. What about this implementation as an incremental step:
- When the user selects “Hot” in `Default Topic List`, then `Default Top Period` and `Topic List Sort By` are greyed out because they are not relevant to Hot. `Default List Filter` remains as a setting, since it is relevant to Hot as well.
- If the user deselects Hot, then `Default Top Period` and `Topic List Sort By` are selectable again, keeping the value they had before Hot was selected.
