Brilliant, thanks.
I have managed to move all the topics into a New Category using a rake task (Bulk move many topics from one category to another - #34 by tshenry) and then deleted the old category and renamed the new category so no-one should know any difference, hopefully.
I have now managed to disable the plugin and the site is now working as expected.
