# Archive/Trash Bin

Is there something like an Archive or Trash Bin where when someone (OP, or mods) deletes their post, admins can see it?
It would be really useful in viewing history since my forum is money related.

Deleted topics are basically gone from all lists, even to moderators, and should be an extreme action.
If you just want to make a topic go away, I suggest using Close or Invisible instead.

The only other option we could think of is creating a Mod-only category and moving posts to it.
More hassle then hiding them, but Deleting isn’t a workable choice.
The only drawback with hiding them is they don’t “collapse” so topics could get long with them for Mods that can see them.

It’s pretty common on vBulletin and phpBB forums to have a ‘Graveyard’ forum, all threads that are to be archived get moved there.

@codinghorror This would be a great feature! There should be an option in the admin panel that enables the “trash can” category (which only mods +) can see where all deleted posts can be seen.

As @haiku noted you can already do this right now, just create a category, edit permissions so it is visible only to staff.

But that means that I have to move the thread everytime, instead of just pressing delete.

Topics or posts? You can already see deleted posts inline.
We can probably add a method of viewing all currently deleted topics @Mittineague it just isn’t requested much. @sam perhaps this is another querystring we need, to browse deleted topics in a category or all categories.

Hi Jeff,
It’s not so much not being able to view them (Mods can) but that Delete has complications in the “leaving a paper trail” way.
AFAIK from my albeit somewhat limited testing, When a post is Deleted it
Can not be found in Search
Removes any Notification Flags it might have had associated with it
We have a great team of Mods, but at times we like to cross-reference a new post with an older one.
eg. that “haven’t I seen this before” feeling.
