Automatically adding users to groups doesn't work all the time

We have a few custom groups set up so that known customers and partners are automatically added to the groups “Customers” and “Partners” respectively.

This works sometimes, but not all times.

E.g. some users with are in the group Customers, some arent.

Logs don’t seem to contain anything relevant to this (other than Sidekiq repeatedly running out of memory and restarting all the time, but that seems to be the expected behaviour).
We are not running SSO, we are using OAuth signups

How can I start to debug this?

Wild guess: does it have do do with case matching

Good suggestion, but all the emails I see are lowercase

Were some of those users invited?

Yes, the majority of them

@gerhard is this feature not intended to work for invited users?

It should work for invited users as well. The problem is that some users ignore the activation email that is sent after they accept the invite. As a security precaution, users are only added to groups after they validate their email address.

(And yes, we know that the activation email isn’t really necessary when the invite was sent via email. We are planning to improve this.)

Today I fixed a problem that prevented users from being added to groups when they change their email address. Maybe some of your users were affected by that too.
