Backface-visibility: hidden causes blurry font

I noticed that .docked .d-header has the css-rule backface-visibility:hidden, which causes all text in the header to be rendered with grayscale font smoothing in Chrome in Windows. This makes the text appear unnecessary blurry, especially white on colour such as the default login/sign-up buttons.

Why is that rule there and could we remove it?

As I recall, someone submitted that in a PR because it fixed some arcane rendering issue on some browsers.

I noticed the blurry font too. Maybe @Lid can tell as a little bit more about the performance issue that got fixed with this PR:
