Better insights into your community with the redesigned admin dashboard

Some cosmetic feedback the date selector can be a bit ‘disconnected’ from the dashboard data if there are site issues.

And another one: I love that we can now pin Data Explorer queries to the dashboard, but there are two options:

  1. The table view does not match how Data Explorer renders it - user_id should be translated/linked to a username.
  2. I would very much prefer to view this as a graph - have you considered adding a toggle to the ‘pin to dashboard’ window that lets us select the view mode?

We definitely have, just not for this first version. Good to know the interest for it is already there. Thanks for the feedback!

I hate to be someone who grouses about changes, but I really wish you would include the version information as one of the customizable sections.

As an admin one of my number 1 jobs is knowing about the update status of my site.

Absolutely, that’s why it’s all getting its own page instead of being buried somewhere between reports and charts

I click on Admin and it was literally the very first thing I saw. I would say that the was the very least buried thing.

Yes but it wouldnt be like that anymore with the redesigned dashboard anyway. It will be 2 clicks now for it to be the first thing you see.

Yes, I was making feedback on the new dashboard design. You already have customization. Why not include such an important item in a dash board? What kind of dashboard doesn’t show the most important information? That’s literally the point of a dashboard.

Every single time I went to the admin area the very first thing I would see is the update status of the software. Now that won’t be the case. I will have to actively decide if I want to check the update status.

Anyway, just some user feedback.

Okay, I dont think were likely to change this back but I made a note of it. Thanks

Thanks for noting! And thank you for all your hard work!

And to be clear, I’m not asking that the whole new update interface should be moved back to the admin page. Just the widget.

(to add to my user story… we upgrade our site manually from the command line, so I have never needed to go to an updates area on the site before. The admin page gave me exactly what I needed to know. It was terribly convenient.)

Looking again at the new admin page, it’s literally just different kinds of reports. Something an admin might be interested in. But nothing nearly as critical as keeping the site up to date.

I think the likely way out of this eventually is the customizability of the dashboard itself.

We’re in the early days of that story, and you can do some things today like choose which sections to show and in what order, and add reports backed by custom data explorer queries.

I could see the ability to add tiles with other info fitting into the overall design here, and “which version is currently deployed” being an option there.

In the meantime, that “manage updates” page is a good one to build some muscle memory around. It might also get more better in the future too.

It feels to me like there are two perspectives because there are two roles: one person is concentrating on the human interactions on the forum as a community, and another person is concentrating on the computer system and software which implements the forum.

Both are valid and both are important.

In the case of a sole operator self-hosting their own forum, both roles may be in the same person - that’s true for me.

But please, as a designer, do not forget the Morlocks who keep the system running, and who do care about the software version.

לייק 1

We do not, that’s why there is a new dedicated page with all the info on it that you had before, and maybe more… The only trade off is that it’s one extra click away, but it’s also a direct link from the admin sidebar. That’s hardly forgetting.
