Building a Community to Build a Product

(Travis) #1

I wrote an article about my experience and use of Discourse and how it lead me to a larger startup initiative. I thought some of you might find it interesting since I’ve noticed a lot of people here are in a similar trajectory.

This is the story of the founding of a simple gaming forum called Strats.co and how focused communities can be utilized to deliver ideas for future endeavors.

nice forum, can you share how you build up your user base from 0 to now?

Sure, I could make a more detailed post if there’s interest.

To distill it down to a couple quick steps:

  • I became involved in a larger community with similar interests.
  • I seeded my forum with some early data to get discussing going.
  • Then I pinged that original community with requests to participate in the discussion on my forum.

I also did a lot of community giveaways in the form of game keys (which I was given for free to give out on the community).
