# Chat not working after dev install

After following all steps in doc: [Install Discourse on Ubuntu or Debian for Development](https://meta.discourse.org/t/install-discourse-on-ubuntu-or-debian-for-development/14727)
I tried running server using “bin/ember-cli -u” and (“bin/ember-cli” + “rails s” in saparate terminal windows).
I am getting error as: “network error” in chat window.
Do i need to running any additional command in terminal? or did i missed something?

No, in server logs i only get 500 error. nothing else (nor even the line at which code breaks)

What is the backtrace and error for the 500?
My suspicion is you may not have run migrations, have you?

yes I was going to say the same but it’s definitely in the steps of the doc 🤷♂️
I would recommend you to try using: [Developing Discourse using a Dev Container](https://meta.discourse.org/t/developing-discourse-using-a-dev-container/336366)
That should be a much easier way for you to get a working dev env.

I ran all the command from the doc and wanted to install discourse manually (not with docker) and all three DB’s are migrated successfully.

Initially, When running “bundle install”. i got issues with gem (“mini\_racer”, “0.18.pre1”) so i downgrade it to ‘~\> 0.6.2’.
Is that can be the cause? This is the only thing i did different from document.

Maybe, once you’ve run migrations again, check for 500 and report the detail of that error from within `/logs` here.

FYI current Ruby is something closer to 3.3.6 in Production, so switching to that version of Ruby might be a good idea.
(this is why @j.jaffeux recommends the docker install as these things can be a pain in non-docker dev)

Might relate to your issue with `mini-racer`.
I note I have `0.18.0.pre1` installed on my dev instance.
(and I can confirm sending messages on Chat works).
As per my prior suggestion, see if upgrading Ruby helps you use the latest version of that gem.
