All I have to do to disable the heart / like system is in the settings > post menu click X next to like and save? It seems to remove the hearts from the posts but I wasn’t sure if there was anything else I have to do.

Yes, Discourse was built with deep integration with Likes so disabling them affects many aspects of the forum. An admin must have a very good reason for wanting to disable Likes.
