It worked!!!
Thank you for the tip about connecting directly to port 3000. That appears to be what made the difference.
One thing of note (at least in my local configuration) is that I also needed to set ALLOW_EMBER_CLI_PROXY_BYPASS=1 before starting ember-cli.
