# Default Category Notifications

It depends 🤷‍♀️

There is a default notification level for the topic based on its category and tags (based on [your tracking preferences](https://meta.discourse.org/my/preferences/tracking), which are based on the tracking setting of groups you are a member of, and the default configuration in the site settings).

Once you interact with the topic, the preference for “automatically track topics I enter…” and “When posting…” can change the tracking status too.
