Disallow posting to main category doesn't work

(Ali) #1

I created a category containing two support-categories.

  • Main
  • Sub 1
  • Sub 2

I only want people to be allowed to post in Sub 1 or Sub 2 but not in Main. Therefore I set only this permission to Main

Still topics can be created in Main. What am I doing wrong?

Are you “everyone” or not?

(Ali) #3

I am admin. Shouldn’t they be in Everyone?

Permissions do not inherit. You will need to set that on each subcategory.

I think I didn’t make clear enough what is going wrong.

Despite setting “everyone - can see” in the Main category I can still post in it whereas I only want everyone to be able to post in Sub 1 and Sub 2

AFAIK sub-categories can not have looser restrictions than the parent category

(Jeff Atwood) #7

No, that is not true. You can set up weird states if you try, but parent having no write is fine since, again, permissions are not related between parent and child, they are completely independent.

Here’s your problem
Create a normal account for you that you can impersonate when testing permissions – being admin bypasses almost all permission checks, including category permissions.
