Is this accessible by the API at all? I can see a world where we want to automatically generate and close chats for cohorts.

You could give them a link that automatically adds them to a group with access to the chat. Perhaps the “Arrive at topic” can be a topic explaining what the chat is and contain a link to the chat/how to use it.

To get the channel information the endpoint is: /chat/api/channels/:id.json

If you want to access the messages: /chat/api/channels/:id/messages.json with available params being:

Yep, you can send them a link to a channel or an individual message. If they aren’t in the channel yet, but have access to join, they can follow that link and choose to join (whether or not you’ve invited them via a mention).

The mention → invite flow is a convenience if all you’re trying to do is add them to the channel, or if you happen to mention them, and discover at that time they aren’t already there.

Yep, in general, everything is accessible via the API. If you find things you’re trying to do that aren’t, let us know.

Server API Improvements

We’re continuing our exploration and prototyping around improvements to the usability & consistency of our server APIs. We are beginning to align on a plan for an API that is consistent with the JSON:API spec and uses date-based versioning in the header of requests. We expect to be in a place where we can share more details and start moving into the implementation phase soon. Watch this space for more soon!
