Discourse sending huuuuge number of emails

Hi,

we are currently facing the problem of discourse sending huge number of emails day by day (our SMTP account have been deactivated by our provider meanwhile). Since the sent emails are counted in the forums’ “Email sent” statistic i assume the forum sends all these emails itself (somehow).

Depending on the number of users i would expect something around 10.000 to be normal. Any idea which trail to follow in order to find the culprit? Is there any statistic showing the amount of emails by user?

Your first point of call would be here:
/admin/email/sent

This shows you the type of emails and to who.


If your site / content has been recently imported into Discourse…
… did you ensure sending emails was disabled during import?
it might be background tasks from the import sending the emails.

Consider checking /sidekiq for a long list of queued tasks.

ispgateway.de is one of the domains of your email provider.

We have activated email polling … something in combination with that?

I remember something about a loop of emails being sent to yourself… causing a rejection email… which again sends to itself.

Consider disabling polling for now.

and check your mail settings

have a search around the forum - I can’t remember the exact topic.

found issues like Email reply system issue sent a million unwanted mails which describes the same behaviour but didn’t find a solution since we configured the reply email address accordingly.
