The Discourse Tooltips plugin, an official tool maintained by the Discourse team, enables previewing topic contents on hover. It is installed via app.yml and not as a theme component, as it requires server-side data not accessible via client-side JS alone pfaffman. While some users note its theme-like behavior volanar, others clarify its plugin nature due to data-loading requirements. There’s discussion about potentially converting it to a theme component JammyDodger, but awesomerobot recommends using the newer, actively maintained theme component version instead, as the plugin may be retired. Some users report compatibility issues with newer Discourse versions haozi. For support, bugs, UX, or feature requests, users are directed to post in the appropriate Meta categories tagged with tooltips. The plugin currently shows tooltips on topic lists, but not on topic references within post text pfaffman. Loading content via API on demand is technically possible but may cause performance issues with multiple tooltips per page pfaffman.
To be honest, this is quite an old plugin so there’s a chance it could be converted to a theme component now. I know some of the others have made that leap. I’m afraid I don’t know specifically if it would be possible with this one though.
Does this also create a tooltip for topics referenced in text of posts? Also, would using the API of Discourse and loading the topic content on demand (thereby not requiring it to be a plugin, merely a JS-based enhancement) be a solution?
