# Email notifications turned on by default?

Hi everyone,
Hopefully a quick one to answer - are the summary/digest emails sent out to users by default (when they haven’t been active for a while), or do they have to be opted into? I can’t remember if I ever actively opted in, but I do receive them.

It depends on the settings.
On a default install they are turned on but an admin can change the default to disabled.
In the site settings the default for new accounts is controlled by `default email digest frequency` which defaults to weekly.
