Free Hosting for Open Source v2

Why does this say minimum 10 contributors, but the quotation-request page says minimum 50?

Perhaps the limit increased or decreased over time @rishabh?

On the Open Source form at https://free.discourse.group, you’ll see that the minimum value is 10:

Is there are chance you are talking about the $50/mo patronage requirement for Free hosting for Patreon creators instead?

The default content for the Terms of Service page refers to a company name and city. Does anyone have advice for modifying these to be appropriate for an open-source project?

Hi @alxndr, unfortunately, we’re not going to be of much help here. I’d strongly recommend reaching out to a lawyer familiar with your organization and the laws of the state/country where it is based. Relevant:

Thanks, follow up question — I left the fields blank when installing (v 2.7.0.beta3) and the TOS/ Privacy pages content have placeholders in them… can I fill in values for those fields and then regenerate the boilerplate text? Or do I need to fill them in manually now?

I’m not 100% positive, but I do believe you need to fill them in manually now. I don’t believe changing the site settings after initial setup regenerates the TOS.

Is the free hosting for open source limited to the standard plan plugins?

3개의 좋아요

Yes, the plugins on the free-tier hosting are the same as the ones on our standard tier :+1:

So no chance for the official calendar plugin? Events are really important for oss communities.

6개의 좋아요

No chance today. We do evaluate the plugin offerings on a semi-regular basis, so it certainly could be added in the future.

Thank you for offering this program.

Any chance this might be re-visited soon? I wanted to have access to the calendar plugin in my free tier site. (good to see you guys again btw)

Hi all. The link to the application form from the free-hosting information page doesn’t seem to be working. Could someone please let me know where to apply? I also sent an email to the Discourse team email, but wasn’t sure where best to ask this.

Thank you.

PS - I’m the founder of the open-source PiTrac golf launch monitor project. We’re considering moving our discussion community from Discord to Discourse.

As background, the PiTrac Discord server has over 1,000 members, and hosts discussion of our project in a number of channels. Our github project has dozens of active contributors, and we also have a youtube channel and other associated social media presence. We don’t sell anything, we just want to promote the open-source PiTrac project, and our discussion forum is the main point of support for folks all around the world.

Hey @James_Pilgrim

Thanks for reporting this. We’re looking into it and I’ll update you when I know more. I can confirm we have received your email too so someone will be in touch that way.

It looks like someone signed up for the free site from Discourse ID, and they accidentally took the free.discourse.group domain.

You can use this for a free Discourse forum (I don’t know its restrictions, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same as the starter plan):

https://id.discourse.com/create-site

If you have over 1,000 members, though, applying for an open-source project would be the best option, as there are more perks with that, and you have a high chance of getting it.

This is now fixed, sorry about that. @PandaKai7’s analysis is spot-on, that’s what happened.

And yes, you can use either the Free for open source signup flow or the link PandaKai shared above.

Thank you all for the nearly-instantaneous responses. Will do.

I wonder… should the free.discourse.group site have a link to You're invited to try the Discourse Free plan beta!?

Yes, we plan to update that page this week. Thanks for the nudge :handshake:
