Google search results issue with forums powered by Discourse

(Tudor Vedeanu) #1

I noticed when I search something on Google, most of the results found on Discourse-powered forums start with this message:

“Unfortunately, your browser is too old to work on this Discourse forum. Please upgrade your browser.”

Is there a way to avoid that?

This sounds like a real bad regression @Neil

I’m covering for @Neil who is off for the holidays. It looks like Googlebot was parsing our Javascript as that’s the only place where the string occurs. I added an extra check to not display that message to Googlebot and hopefully that will fix the problem. We’ll have to keep an eye on it for a bit as we get indexed again.

So not really a regression but Google’s web spider unexpectedly parsing JavaScript.

For that string to appear in the DOM, the JavaScript needs to be executed. Quick googling finds some articles that claim that google’s web crawler is doing exactly that. See this article. I wonder if our noscript stuff is being seen anymore.

Seems OK now?

Feel free to flag this for re-opening if it isn’t
