Joe’s point about hiring for temperament rather than treating moderation as a reward really stuck with me. In a small forum I helped look after, the most reliable helpers were not always the most frequent posters. They were the people who quietly welcomed newcomers and stayed calm when a thread got tense. I also like the idea of a gradual runway and a private space where moderators can ask questions without feeling judged. That seems more sustainable than handing someone full permissions on day one. How do you usually handle that first month — do you pair a new moderator with someone experienced, or let them shadow decisions before they act on their own?
