I just discovered [twist](https://twistapp.com/). Looks like something worth keeping an eye on!

On the surface, it looks like they are aiming to hit a sweet spot between Slack and Discourse. [This blog post](https://blog.doist.com/why-were-betting-against-real-time-team-messaging-521804a3da09) is a good introduction, as well as their comparison pages for [Slack](https://twist.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003654569) and [Email](https://twist.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003654589).

Like Discourse, threads (e.g. topics) are first class citizens and they have decided _against_ a presence indicator.

But like Slack, they have the channels you have chosen to join shown persistently on the left, rather than only having _all_ categories under a dropdown or on a separate page (related topics [here](https://meta.discourse.org/t/allow-users-to-star-or-favorite-categories-then-list-them-at-the-top/38643) and [here](https://meta.discourse.org/t/topic-list-tabs-for-user-customizeable-saved-filters/40953)).

I’m also curious to hear other first hand impressions if anyone else here has played around with it.
