Yes, this was an intentional change. See [The topic list doesn't need a category column](https://meta.discourse.org/t/the-topic-list-doesnt-need-a-category-column/101352) for details in discussion regarding the change.

If you wish to add the category column back, use the [Add Category Column](https://meta.discourse.org/t/add-category-column/103893) theme component.
