There is also an “add footnote” option in the cog menu of the composer,
which adds `^[Footnotes]`\[1\]

As Moin mentioned, these are inline footnotes. I think we may have some plans of unifying its appearance, as the … isn’t easily recognizable as a footnote – this is not the first time it’s mentioned as a feature of its own. For example, both the new rich editor and the preview display them as [1] .
