How does category sorting actually work?

So, I did some digging here, but wasn’t able to find any documentation on this.
How does category sorting by activity actually work?
My intuition was, that category with latest reply should appear first on the list, but this does not seem to be the case on our community. So, how it should work? Are subcategories counted in? If yes, how?

There is a site setting that lets you sort categories in a predetermined order.

Yes, thanks, I’m aware of this. But I don’t want predetermined order, I’d like to know how ‘sort by activity’ actually works

Most recently replied to bumps it to the top, like everything else.

Same for subcategories? I.e.
Cat 1
-Sub 1
-Sub 2
Cat 2

  • Sub 1
  • Sub 2

If someone replies to a topic in Cat 2 Sub 2, then Cat 2 should be on top of the list?

Hmm not sure @neil would need to answer that. But I suspect it is the parent category only.

Looking at the sort code, it’s sorting by how many new topics there were in the past week. How that’s counted seems to only include the parent category.

Well, that’d explain some facts. Thank you very much
