How to get people to "reply to post"

(Fellowship Forums) #1

We launched our forum recently. We are getting decent activity, but no one seems to be “replying to post”, they are all just “replying to topic”.

What tactics do you use to encourage people to reply to the appropriate thing?

There’s not a whole lot you can do besides leading by example. Reply-to-post is more of a convenience feature anyhow so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

As Erlend mentioned, it’s not critical that someone responds directly to a post, but it’s certainly helpful in that it provides some context to the conversation.

If conversations are becoming hard to follow because you’re missing the context that replying to a post provides, it might also be worth pointing out that users can highlight text and quote it in their response?

The problem is, you can’t really lead by example because the difference is barely visible, especially to those users who don’t intuitively see the difference between the buttons in the first place. The default site settings that hide the reply to post thingy probably don’t help either.

We had a good discussion about this exact problem a while ago and @awesomerobot came up with a good idea to tweak the UI. Perhaps that topic could be undeleted?

Nope, it won’t be undeleted.
