# How to increase the Category name length?

Can you please clarify what you mean?

I’m not aware of any restriction on the length of category names.

I am trying to create a category with the name **M.Sc. Environmental Science (Under Faculty of S & H)** , but, discourse restricts the length that I am trying to set as category name.

I took a look and there’s indeed a limit on the character count for category names. I’ve never ran into it because it’s 50 characters - which is very high.

I’m sure there’s a reason why you want to use that name but I would recommend using a shorter name.

A category name that long will give you trouble when it’s displayed in different places across the UI. We truncate super long names anyway. So, even if you mange to create a category with a name that long - which is not currently possible - most of the time, the full name would not be displayed.

Consider using the “about category” topic in the category if you want to explain what it’s about. The description for categories is displayed in a number of places like
