How to localize the “uncategorized” category name

(Luke) #1

The category name of “uncategorized” is not localized. How to fix this?

(Régis Hanol) #2

I believe you should use the uncategorized_name site setting for that.

Got it! Thanks very much .

I think there must be a bug with this.
If I modify the uncategorized_name to “未分类” which means uncategorized in chinese, then I can’t open the uncategorized list again.
The server return 404 page.

I thought we fixed this @neil? Can you check?

I just fixed this. Changing uncategorized_name to anything (even english words) would cause this problem.

I cannot find such a configuration in v.
Please advise.

It’s been changed since then.

Now, you have to go to /category/uncategorized and click the edit button to change the uncategorized category name

EDIT: seems like you’ve already figured it out.

Why do we even have such a specialized “uncategorized” category anyway? Its description is still set under admin (different way from all others). IMHO it would be simpler if it was just another category… Sure I can achieve that by disabling it, thus my question. Why? :open_mouth:

Because uncategorized is a special case, it means no category.

While translating server.yml I believe I found a more complete answer with untranslated strings, by chance:

  • Uncategorized can’t have a parent category
  • Can’t delete Uncategorized
  • Don’t show the badge for uncategorized topics in topic lists

And maybe some more because it is, as you said, a special case.
