How to make a private bucket on Amazon S3 for backup?

What do you mean by private bucket?

@codinghorror talks about it here:

If you have an AWS account and create a bucket, by default it is private. You should double check that it’s not visible to the world by looking at the access settings, but I’ve always found you have to do more work to make it accessible without the access credentials.

An old topic, but this says you can test public/private like this:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/[bucket_name]/

or

http://[bucket_name].s3.amazonaws.com/

As of now, the former format doesn’t work for me. I imagine that means that it’s been deprecated.

Use the latter format: http://[bucket_name].s3.amazonaws.com/
