Following on from my post in the Recommended Hosting Providers for Self Hosters, here is a full tutorial on my experience migrating a long-running self-hosted Discourse forum from DigitalOcean to Linveo:
That relies on a voucher which presumably will expire at some point after the marketing period has ended?
Otherwise the price is similar to the competition?
Great saving in the meantime though!
I had a pretty good deal with Scaleway to begin with but it was tied to the specific VPS. When they were discontinued I had to migrate to a more expensive machine (but of course). But who can turn their nose up at the discount in the meantime? ![]()
@merefield Yes, I assume it’s a loss leader to get early adopters onboard.
The discount has been available since April at least; I don’t know how much longer it will be. As I understand, plans with the discount are grandfathered in at the discounted rate. I doubt the discount would transfer to a different/larger plan, however.
The AMD KVM deal has expired (I’m grandfathered in), but it has been replaced with a similar offer on Intel KVM VPSs. Rather than 2GB ram and 50GB disk for ~$25/year, the 2026 offer is 4GB ram and 25GB disk for ~$34/year. The new discount code is LET26INTELKVM2026 .
Thanks for raising, impressive deals!
OK there is one red flag in their Acceptable Use Policy:
Using more than 25% of your allocated CPU for a period longer than 1 hour is prohibited and is grounds for suspension or termination.

I’m not sure how easy that is going to be to guarantee with your average Discourse instance …
And somehow this feels like they are over-stating the spec if that’s a hard rule.
@merefield Ah, I didn’t know that. If I have hit this limit in the past two years, I haven’t noticed; but my site isn’t that large compared to some.
I agree they should make this clear in their marketing, because usually “1x (v)CPU” means 100% use of one thread.
For reference, this is what 1 week of 2x CPU usage looks like (no major traffic spikes shown; I’ll try to check next time there is one). The spikes are probably rebuilds.
I’m also curious how this is enforced or monitored. Does it get throttled automatically, and this is just for people who try to circumvent the throttling? Or, are there no software limits, and if you go over you can get in trouble? (I’m hoping it’s the first.)
If it is a hard limit, it would take the $4.07/month 8GB RAM / 4x CPU / 50 GB NVMe plan to get the equivalent of 1x CPU at continuous 100% usage.
My guess is that Discourse is peaky, especially around upgrades and startup.
So it’s reasonable to have a facility for peak use. An hour seems ok.
I just think you need to read the headline “spec” with a pinch of salt and make sure your “baseline” busy periods (which may last more than one hour) is covered by the 25%.
Essentially it is not Apples to Apples looking across providers.
