Incorrect Unread count on topic page at initial load

I went directly to the main meta.discourse.org page this morning and saw Unread(4), so I clicked on Unread to navigate to 301 Moved Permanently. This is what greeted me:

In short:

  1. In a browser that doesn’t have a Discourse Meta session, go to meta.discourse.org.
  2. Notice the Unread counter is at 4
  3. View the unread list.
  4. See the unread counter at 4, with only 1 topic in the list.

@sam and @eviltrout I really want a failsafe check here that queries the number again at the moment of page transition, and fixes the number right before the page “loads”.
