A bug causing an infinite loop when mentioning is present in all browsers, including Chrome and Safari, in Discourse version 2.3.3. Nicolas_Torres found a patch that fixes the issue, but it’s only available in later versions. Bas requests a backport of the fix to version 2.3.8, as upgrading to 2.4.x is not feasible due to a bespoke plugin setup. However, justin advises that backports for version 2.3 are unlikely, and applying the individual commit directly is the best option, although its consistency is not guaranteed. Note that Discourse ended support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) on June 1, 2020.
To clarify: we’ve tested this on 2.3.8 without plugins as well as our 2.3.3 production env. and the issue is reproducible in Chrome and Safari, it actually crashes the tab in both.
A patch to 2.3.8 would be very nice for us, at the moment we don’t have the budget available to upgrade to 2.4.x (we’re running quite a bespoke plugin setup; so small things tend to break a bit when upgrading major versions).
