# Install discourse as a subfolder?

I’ve seen Discourse instances at `discourse.example.com`, and also at `www.example.com` where Discourse _is_ the website - but what about keeping an existing website at `www.example.com` and having Discourse at `www.example.com/discourse`?

Subfolder installs are discouraged because they are much trickier to implement and are prone to further issues during updates.

If your community is your site use the main domain, otherwise use a subdomain.

There’s no appreciable SEO advantage and **lots** of disadvantages to the approach.
