A small suggestion:
A few users are asking the admin/moderators to switch back to markdown because they are not finding the button/switch on the bar.
I think this happens because the button is mixed with the text format buttons, causing a confusion.
My suggestion is to move the button to the right (top image) or move it outside the text area (bottom image):

One thing that’s happening here on meta currently that bothers me is that the composer menu goes onto a second line at my preferred browser window width. Not sure if there’s an answer for that unless it is moved elsewhere or made smaller, or we remove something else from the menu (or move it into the options submenu).

As a visitor of certain forums, I never switch between markdown and rich text; I only use markdown.
For code blocks it’s an improvement over the proportional type fonts; far easier to align code (no need to count spaces); and the preview shows the proportional fonts anyway.
I notice that meta.discourse.org now uses (seems to use) a proportional font, even in markdown.
