Mailing list mode vs. group inboxes

When mailing list mode is enabled, some of my users believe that they will also get an email for every new message in a group inbox, which is not what actually happens.

I think this is not an unreasonable expectation. Would it make sense to change that?

If no, maybe we can clarify the messaging on the settings page?

Also, Discourse itself is spreading that rumor: On messages, Discourse is showing

You have mailing list mode enabled, so you will be notified of replies to this topic via email.

if mailing list mode is enabled, which is not true

Just have them watch the group mailboxes?

That’s actually pretty hard: I cannot easily do that for them (would have to do it one-by-one) and even they can only do it after the first message arrived.

This is especially annoying if you are setting up one or two new groups a day for a while…

Maybe I should be able to specify the default watching status when creating a group?

I think it’s fine to change it so you auto watch if mailing list mode (every post emailed) is enabled

I would love to see that change!

Would the change happen retroactively? (Once the feature is released)
