More self-evident icon to access the edit message dialog

When I modify an existing post, I find it difficult to locate the commit message entry window. The little “i” icon looks to me as if it should offer a localized help message.

Perhaps this icon could be changed for a “note” icon or even just directly expose the window where you type your commit message.

Treat this as an optional user interface suggestion. TIA.

I propose directly listing which symbols are recommended for use.

I believe it is necessary to add an optional feature of “whether to pop up the edit description window when a user presses the save button for the first time while editing an existing post”. This is because even when only modifying the icon, many users are still likely to overlook it naturally during the seamless saving process, given its location at the top of the editing area. Even in MediaWiki, where the summary is placed between the editing area and the save button, people often forget to fill it in. This is even more true for the Discourse editing window, where the edit description field is positioned at the top of the editing area and is collapsed by default. Furthermore, it would be best if users could freely decide whether to enable this feature.

It took until this post for me to realize there was even an edit reason feature on Discourse and how to use it.

That should speak volumes. It’s not obvious or intuitive, my eyes didn’t even consider anything above the text box of the composer window because that wasn’t what was being edited.

I am a big fan of commit messages, as you might have gathered.

IIRC, the WikiMedia software allows users to opt to force a commit message. So I have that setting active. A feature worth considering for Discourse but not a high priority.

Here are some rough icons to get the ball rolling:

I agree the icon could use an update: ill do that shortly.

For anything beyond that, its better to start a feature request.

Updated here UX: update icon & placement for composer edit-reason by chapoi · Pull Request #37896 · discourse/discourse · GitHub

I also moved it over to the right, to join the other icons. Felt like better placement.

I understand that in the context of RTE, but in markdown mode with a preview on the right, my typing activity happens on the left, so the button now feels quite far away. Having it next to the language selector made more sense to me than having it next to the close button.

Placement on the upper right now looks like it’s part of the composer window options and even less related to the post.

More eyes and usage might benefit from having it near the Save/Discard buttons, which relate directly to the act of editing, and a reason is part and parcel with that. Such as Save Edit Discard Commit Icon

Real-time editing, I guess.

Rich text editor or what-you-see-is-what-you-get editor.

What editing? Theres a toggle, thats it.

Just the general layout of the composer, all the text fields and controls are on the left
