This works well for me on my test site though. Personal messages are disabled and a new user can still go through the Discobot tutorial

You can see that there is no message tab in the hamburger menu but my new user is completing the discobot tutorial

Our solution had previously been to provide new users with a link to start Discobot by sending it a PM.

This is our customized welcome message (system_messages.welcome_user.text_body_template)

Hello, Iā€™m bumping this topic because I just had a new user sign up and unfortunately this issue of allowing people to send messages to discobot even when personal messages are not enabled has come up again.

Is the other option to choose in ā€œdiscourse narrative bot welcome post typeā€ setting ā€œstart the new user tutorial for all new users?ā€

If so, how do we customize the text of that post?

but iā€™m not sure what post you are referring to :sweat_smile:
