Hey Cliff, welcome to Discourse Meta.
Currently, you are only able to share text content (such as links) to Discourse.
The ability to share files (such as photos, videos, gifs, etc) is coming soon to web browsers, and will be implemented by us as soon as Google Chrome implements it.
I can share photos from my phone into a Discourse category just fine. I’ve been doing so regularly.
Oh. I see. It’s a link. doh. Sorry.
I assume you use Google Photos app to see your camera photos, and that specific app share photos using a “just in time” link.
The feature that allows PWAs to register as share targets for files is coming along fine, and should be available this year.
I’d like to revisit this conversation, as I believe Chrome now supports letting a PWA be a share target.
I would like to be able to use the share-nodes icon to easily share an image to a Discourse instance that I’ve saved to my phone as a PWA.
I chatted briefly with @pmusaraj about the idea, and he asked, “What would Discourse do once it receives the photo?”
I noticed another app I use pops up a menu:
So perhaps Discourse could offer a menu the same way, with options like:
I’m interested to know what others think. What would Android users expect to see after selecting your Community as the share target?
All of the options mentioned above would be great, and then the post editor could be opened with pic already inserted so that text can be added prior to submitting.
Currently I can share pics to Teams, WhatsApp and Discord, but not Discourse!
Looks fabulous to me!
Wow, that looks great
. Could this work with the Discourse Hub app? Or is that too complicated to implement?
It’s a separate process, but yes, we should fix this to work with the Discourse Hub app as well.
