Overall forum stats

(Martin) #1

Not sure if this has been suggested already but from a simple search by me I cannot find anything. As a user of forums myself I like to see just how many posts the forum has overall for no other reason than to be nosy.

I think it could be a good idea to, on the categories page, have a total posts and topics at the bottom of the list just to show how many total posts there is across the forum.

I am not really a fan of information for the sake of information, without clear utility. To me this is infoporn.

I think the philosophy of “just because we can” is a big reason existing forum software is as bad as it is, they threw the kitchen sink at everyone.

Every pixel of information on the screen should (ideally) be defensibly doing something useful for the user.

(that said these kind of stats exist in spades on the admin homepage)

From communities I’ve seen people like to share the milestones of the community and congratulate each other when a big milestone is reached. I guess that would be my defense for having overall stats displayed to members too. At least admins can see which is good.

That is exactly the kind of thing I would use these type of stats for. However, a plugin would suffice. As a workaround just make some fancy graphics with a tool like infogr.am

Well, there is the /about page now which has these kinds of basic stats.
