A non-profit aviation community is seeking help to migrate their FUDforum 3.1.3 installation to Discourse, with 26,017 messages and 4,029 topics, within 1-2 weeks. Christian_Bailey clarifies that most users interact via a parallel email listserv, and content is uploaded as forum topics, so user preservation is not needed—only content migration. pfaffman notes that no existing import script for FUDforum exists, requiring a custom script, but mentions experience with similar migrations, including one completed in under a week. tobiaseigen recalls FUDforum’s strong email integration, highlighting that if an mbox archive is available, migration would be easier. Alex_Diker comments on the aesthetic appeal of older forums, while Jonathan5 agrees on FUDforum’s email strengths but acknowledges Discourse’s advantages.

Hello @Christian_Bailey , I can help you with this. Please check your PM.
Please see Discourse Migration - Literate Computing
There isn’t an existing import script for FUDforum, so a new script will need to be developed, which might make your time line a challenge. I’ve done over a hundred migrations over the past 9 years and have done many custom migrations. At least one I did in under a week.
If you’ve got an mbox file(s) then it should be pretty easy. It’ll be more work to not import the users, but there are ways to do that.
I should clarify that we’ve been running a parallel email listserv, which is how most users interact with the forum. All of the emails that they send to the listserv are simply uploaded as forum topics. So we don’t need to preserve users. We really just want to preserve all of the content.
A bit off topic, but I loved FUD Forum back in the day. It was one of the only forums that properly handled email, and that you could just feed an mbox into to migrate to it.
If you are using mailman or a listserv tool that preserved an mbox archive then you’ll be in great shape for migrating to Discourse.
hey at least it still looks nice, i came from the days of phpbb and vbulletin being pricey
Yes. I think even now, integration with a mailing list would be closer with FUDForum. Discourse has other advantages though.
