# Badge on categories

It’s just a question

Why don’t we display a badge on categories to indicate that there are new messages or replies?

There must be a technical reason, perhaps 🤔

Where specifically? we do in some places, like the sidebar

but don’t in other places like some /categories page layouts or the topic list dropdown

I was thinking about the main page, like in the example, but we can’t see it.

My homepage leads to the categories. I know we can use filters like “recent,” etc., but I’m still trying to improve accessibility for users of all levels. Maybe I’m just trying to reinvent the wheel 🤣

Oh yes, this is something we should consider… some /categories page layout options are more dynamic than others. The boxes with subcategories style you’re showing here doesn’t have anything to indicate activity. The other options for `Desktop category page style` show recent topics or at least the number of topics posted.

I use the category + boxes plugin for myself, which I modified to display new messages in categories with a badge showing the number of unread topics. I’m also thinking of adding a second badge with a different color (orange, for example) to indicate the number of unread replies. We’ll see, but I still have some work to do 😅
