Ah! That clarifies things. I don’t believe there is any way to change the topic excerpt via a setting. However, you can try this to specify the topic excerpt in the topic list:

you could explicitly mark begin and end excerpts in the first post

we have 2 versions that work, a div with the class excerpt or a span with the class excerpt

I tested it and it works quite well.
